Mantis Shrimp Painting | The Future of Art | Merch to Blow Minds | Last Festivals of Summer

“Above all, I would like to extend the boundaries of what is not regarded as unthinkable, in light of how little we really understand about the world.”

“The only thing that we can be sure of the future is that it will be absolutely fantastic.”

Happy August, everyone!  It's fully summer and I'm fully in it:  Gearing up to record and release my first studio music since the Double-Edged Sword EP – that's six years, far too long.  Shredding a series of animal-themed paintings, satisfying my underfed inner scientific illustrator.  Enjoying this summer's double-feature workshop series on "Entertainment As Social Action" and "Visionary Sobriety," explaining how we are all intoxicated by culture, but can use the instruments of media mind control to liberate rather than oppress.  (On that note, did you see my recent interview with poet-philosopher and legendary badass William Irwin Thompson?)

And more...as usual, too much to share at once.

As soon as I am back from this weekend's Arise Festival, I'll get to work on readying it all to share with you.  But for now, enjoy this relatively lightweight update – and feel free to write if you have anything to share!  I love hearing from you, and with most of y'all it's been too long.

"Imagine a color you can't imagine. Now do that nine more times. This is how the mantis shrimp do."

"The mantis shrimp is my new favorite animal, because in the presence of such extraordinary light and beauty it embraces DARKNESS.  It extols DEATH with the luminescent brilliance of a dying star."

I can't say anything about this amazing animal that isn't said at the two links in those quotes above...both of which I highly recommend to you.  This is one of the strangest, most wonderful creatures in the ocean, which is saying a lot, obviously, I mean the ocean is pretty huge.  And this thing is so awesome it got its own section on one of the best episodes of NPR's Radiolab.

Part of a series of charismatic critters, with previous entries including the Red-Tailed Hawk, Western Meadowlark, Barton Springs Salamander, Ruby-Throated Hummingbird, and Common Kingfisher...this is the first invertebrate, though.  And how.

Which animals (or plants) should I paint next?

Interview with Sara Huntley for SolPurpose.com

“No holds barred, I’d describe myself as a pattern hunter in nature – a synesthesia artist seeking to see things normally unwitnessed, translating waveforms of data into different spectrums of perception.”

Oakland-based Sara “Seraphinianus” Huntley is a shining example of a generation of multimedia artists eagerly taking to emerging media – a wave of renaissance people fluidly adapting to the shifting technocultural landscape by anchoring their expressions in a broader and more comprehensive understanding of nature, consciousness, and the human experience. Where art meets science, tribal meets future, and movement meets music, you’ll find Sara, leading her explosively creative intermedia life-as-art existence. I was delighted to catch up with her about what inspires her and the new forms of trans-verbal communication appearing on our cultural horizons…

Various Rent-Paying Items of Note

I'm not a starving artist.  But I do give most of my creative work away in the form of free music, writing, and rhetorical performances.  So I deeply appreciate it when people (such as yourself) step up to show their support (or yours) by purchasing prints of my artwork, or by acquiring some wearable token of cosmic bling like these fine souvenirs below:

Last year I designed my final embroidered hat with Grassroots California for Herbivore Designs – a piece I consider one of my crowning achievements.  The first two less intricate designs sold out almost instantly, but somehow there are still plenty of these left for sale, so if you've ever felt the urge to decorate your head beyond compare, here is your opportunity!

RaveNectar is retiring the men's and women's tees of my painting "Every Day Is A New Year" this Friday, August 8th. Until then, they're 20% off – get yours for $40 while supplies last!

I'm a fan of pushing the envelope – designing stuff that tests the resolution limits of production equipment and the sanity of random passersby.  These pins definitely qualify; the original vectors actually had to be simplified because we aren't living in the future, apparently.  So these are, literally, the most complicated pins possible for their size at this moment in history.  Pretty cheap, considering.

My Natural Habitat Includes These Festivals

This event has something for everyone: jam bands, bluegrass, electronica, spoken word, yoga, reggae, meditation, tribal funk, you name it.  I'm co-headlining the Starwater Bar, an impressive maté bar and festival-within-a-festival that will also feature performances by such luminaries as Anne Waldman (beat poet who founded the Naropa University Creative Writing program), Future Simple Project (the superb DJ tag team whose music inspired many of my early live paintings), and Beth Preston (songstress of wide renown, whose work deserves your listening)...among many others.

Hands down, the best festival in Texas – assuming you like epic art installations, huge teams of live painters, unbeatable eclectic music lineups, strange and beautiful cross-media collaborations, on-site organic kitchens, and gorgeous Texas pecan groves.  For their tenth year and my fifth, I'm cooking up an unprecedented and totally awesome production with special guest appearances by some of my favorite humans.  But there are more reasons to go than I can enumerate here.

Live at Burning Man 2013 | Interview w/ Rich Doyle | New GRC Embroidered Flatbill | New Pins & Custom Hats | Life In The Glass Age

“The zen tradition has this great saying, ‘Here comes the hearth god, looking for the fire.’ You’re looking everywhere for the fire, and it’s in you. and when you start to find it in yourself, others find you.”
Richard Doyle

I turned 30 this year on January 8th – sharing a birthday with Elvis Presley, David Bowie, and Stephen Hawking, among others.  Big shoes to fill – which is why this year I'm focused on bigger and more meaningful projects than ever before.

Here are the first preliminary echoes of those great works to come.  Thanks for reading, and enjoy!

I Miss You And It's Okay: Live at Burning Man 2013

55 minutes of dreamy, compelling electronic guitar improvisations inspired by and infused with playa magic. Recorded at Burning Man's Center Camp Café and Fractal Planet Village , this hour of multi-channel looping improvisations on guitar, voice, and hardware effects is the alchemical transmutation of enthusiasm, playa dust, and sheer PATHOS into the angelic psychofluid captured here as a trace fossil for your appreciation.

Recommended listening environment: sprawled out on carpet, couch, or bare earth while making love or waiting for inspiration to strike.  Dedicated to the dream woman for whom I spent long years searching, a fantasy I finally released by fire in this year's Temple.

Download it here and enjoy the ride...

My Chat with Sci-Fi Professor Richard Doyle

Richard Doyle is now Professor of Information Science, Rhetoric, and Science Fiction at Penn State and author of a trilogy on emergent forms of knowledge, the latest and most acclaimed of which is the epic treatise, Darwin’s Pharmacy: Sex, Plants, and the Evolution of the Noösphere – probably the finest example yet of 21st Century “psychedelic” writing.

The latest in my SolPurpose.com series of visionary-yet-personal dialogues with various inspirational thinkers, we focused on how human exploration is turning once again to the inner frontiers of consciousness.  Doyle's love for language shone through for our whole conversation.  Here are a few clips:

“Our brains have been the frontier of capitalism for the last twenty years, of which the internet is just one manifestation, and the pharmaceuticalization of everything is the other. It’s like we’re on the border of Oklahoma in the 19th century and the gunshot goes, and everybody goes to stake their claim – it’s like the inner realm is that space, now.”

“We don’t need to create another identity politics around evolving consciousness. Because that’s how we won’t evolve consciousness. But we do need other like-minded souls…to help us by verifying, and debugging, and debunking all the stuff we’re working through as all this stuff continues to unfold.”

"Compass Mandala" Pins by MG x KolorSpun

MG x Herbivore x GRC Embroidered Flatbill

I think my new Grassroots California signature flatbill for Herbivore Designs must be the coolest hat I've ever made – and it damn well better be, because it took almost an entire year to get this most-complicated-design-ever prototyped and ready for sale!  I'm sure you can tell how much work went into this, from the original painted concept to the fully embroidered and sublimation-printed final product (which you can order here):

I'm also still going strong with the custom painted hats.  Here are the latest – email me if you'd like details on getting one of your own:

Join The Discussion: Technology, Art, & Consciousness

I also want you to join me in one of the most important conversations of our times.  Join Life in the Glass Age: Technology, Art, & Consciousness, my new social bookmarking club and discussion group:

We live in an age of accelerating change - not just of our technologies, but of our selves and societies. We define ourselves in relationship to our tools and each other – and as one of us changes, so do we all.  This group is for the exploration of the new worlds coming into being as powerful new knowledge technologies are born and we experience new permutations of old struggles: between privacy and accountability; freedom and security; access and permission.

Encouraged: Posts about the personal and social dimensions of sur- and sous-veillance, Big Data, augmented reality, wearable computing, the Internet of Things, etc. How are we changing - and how are we staying the same? How are we learning to make art out of our increasingly intelligent and responsive environments?  Critical perspectives welcome.

Everyone into the pool!  And thanks again for your support.

Crowdfunding my Google Glass | Reflections on a Shift | New SCI Pin | New GRC Flatbill

NOTE:  If you subscribe to this blog by GMail, please note that they just changed their settings and even though you signed up for it, you are likely to miss future updates from me unless you drag this email from the "promotional" to "primary" folder in their new tab format.  (Sheesh.)

"Art is the opposite of war. Artists wage peace with their creations."

"When everyone realizes they are an artist, we will have world peace."
Roman Villagrana

The big news continues.  Here's the best of what I've been up to for the last few weeks:

Help Support My Google Glass Video & Essay Series!

Google selected me on the basis of this tweet to be one of the first 2000 people with access to their game-changing new smart glasses, which allow me to share my work more fluidly than ever before.  Even though the opportunity is kind of overwhelming, I feel a profound responsibility to take it up so that I can continue my work to inspire and empower as many people as possible by making my life a work of art.

My plan for Glass is to share as much as I can about my own creative process and the amazing community of artists with whom I work through a video record of my transformational festival tour and an ongoing video time capsule project for people to leave messages to their future selves.  You'll be funding an ongoing series of intimate views into the work I do as an acoustic-electronic musician, live painter, public speaker, writer, and awestruck traveler – with plenty of windows into the work of other artists, inventors, and inspiring people.

I am also going to write a series of short essays on the promise and risk inherent in this new technology, and others like it.  It's a Golden Ticket to the Chocolate Factory...but most of those kids got eaten by machines.  It's a Lightsaber...but with great power comes great responsibility.  Hopefully these writings will help a generation of digital natives navigate their world with more care, discernment, wonder, and respect.

Please support this project however you can – in small ways or large – by donating to this campaign and sharing it with your friends, family, and anyone who is interested to see what Glass can do to empower someone in service to the creative commons and the evolution of our planet.

Here are pics of the brass pin and vinyl stickers I'm offering as perks:

The World's First POV Video Projection Onto Stage! (?)

Huge thanks to Morphis Art for taking these four short videos of my set at Gratifly Festival, where I streamed live video from my face back onto the stage, where members of the audience could see themselves up there with me – as well as the fire dancers and live flower arrangement by the legendary Anthony Ward – and get an up-close look at what I'm doing with all of those guitar pedals.

My talk from Om Vibrations 2013: Reflections on a Shift

New Live Album: This Never Happened

For real, guys.  I don't know what you're talking about.  ;)  But Magnetic Eye Records does.  They made this album #007 in their catalog; given all the spy talk surrounding my appointment as a Glass Explorer, I'm tickled.

Official SCI Hornings Hideout Pin [Sold Out]

After years of flirting with The String Cheese Incident to make some official merchandise for them, I was approached by Sales & Shenanigans to make this pin for their Hornings Hideout shows this year.  The limited series of 220 sold out in ten minutes.  D'oh!  We should have made more.  I suspect we will be working together again soon...

The SE Festival Tour Continues

Michael Goes To Burning Man, Part Five

This time as a Glass Explorer.  A big part of the work I'm hoping you'll support with my Indiegogo campaign is to get out there to record as much awesome and inspiring work as possible – both my own and other people's. My full Burning Man speaking and music schedule is here (on the left sidebar).

Fractal Planet is also taking a quantum leap and powering their camp with a RevAir vertical mag-lev wind turbine – clean, quiet energy that will turn the desert winds into the electrical life of celebration. Support their crowdfunding campaign and help usher in a new era for transformational festivals...

You might already know as the "TED Talks for Psychedelics," but it's a lot more than that – over the years it has featured such luminaries as Alex & Allyson Grey, Alexander & Ann Shulgin, John Perry Barlow, Bruce Damer, and more.  They're running yet another donation-worthy campaign, which you can read about and donate to by clicking the pic above.

That's "all" for now!  Deep gratitude from me to you for your time and attention.  I'm always available to respond to your questions and feedback.  Stay in touch and have a beautiful weekend!

The First Google Glass Music Videos | Cowboys Underground | New Hats & Shirt | My Burning Man Schedule

"Maps of reality are so powerful that we forget that they are maps."

"Language is more powerful than, and prior to, any other form of technology."

Well, guys, we are over the rainbow.  I just got back from a week in New York City, getting initiated into Google's Glass Explorer Program, that made my already-synchronistic life look like the black and white intro to Wizard of Oz.  I have so, SO many amazing things to share with you – too many to fit into this newsletter, which I may have to morph to a weekly offering in order to keep pace with the accelerating rate of amazement.  (It's paradoxically the only way I can respect your time – by not making you read an entire magazine every time I send you updates.)

To my knowledge, I'm the first person in the world to record point-of-view video from stage while performing live music – at Penny's Open Mic in the East Village:

"It Hurts So We're Not Dead" in NYC #throughglass

...and then I stopped off on my way out of town at Evan "Skytree" Snyder's apartment to film this music video in his awesome bedroom mirror:

"The Cartographers" in NYC #throughglass

And in just 48 hours, I'm celebrating the end of José Arguelles' Dreamspell Calendar AND psychedelic visionary Aldous Huxley's birthday by screencasting my performance at Gratifly Festival through a projector and onto the stage behind me – closing the loop between artist and audience, letting people see firsthand what I'm doing with my equipment and what they look like on stage.  THIS is digital empathy, people!  A true and utter paradigm shift.  I'm extremely honored to have this opportunity and am already eager to share it with you.  I hope you'll be there but if you aren't, worry not: like everything these days, it WILL be recorded.  ;)

Now, of course, I haven't stopped sharing my "Landscape Channel" video series, which is another angle on the "Michael's point-of-view" idea and an attempt to share with you some of the beautiful places I get to inhabit in my travels.  Here's one from Om Vibrations 2013, where you get to see the amazing lighting design by Synaesthesiax that made this cave jam such a treat for the eyeballs:

"Cowboys Underground" – Live in Longhorn Cavern

New Hats for The Headspace

A series of collaborations with my main conspirator-in-art and awesome roommate, Chaeli Cardenas.
Check out The Headspace for more great custom designs by me and a bunch of other artists...

New Hat & T-Shirt for Herbivore Designs

My third artist signature hat for Grassroots California is about to be released through Austin's own Herbivore Designs.  This is the first hat I've painted with a final embroidered product in mind, and in my personal opinion it's my best yet:

The hat has an accompanying Herbivore Designs tee – I really enjoyed getting back to my roots with pen and ink line illustration and going full-melt on this life-after-death design:

Burning Man: Oh it's on.

Yes, it's true.  I'll be staging my humbly triumphant return to this synchronicity pressure cooker just in time to contribute my music and ideas to some of the finest speaker line-ups this side of the millenium...

(I'll also be roving the Playa in my new life as a Glass Correspondent, covering all of the most amazing new technologies and art installations I can find.  Stay tuned for more about that in the weeks to come as I gear up for a crowdfunding campaign to defray my expenses and share a few of the amazing inventions I encountered on my trip to New York.)

My full BRC schedule is TBA – but for now, check out the amazing offerings by these two camps:

Fractal Planet is also taking a quantum leap and powering their camp with a RevAir vertical mag-lev wind turbine – clean, quiet energy that will turn the desert winds into the electrical life of celebration. Support their crowdfunding campaign and help usher in a new era for transformational festivals...

You may remember Palenque Norte as the annual conference co-founded by Terence McKenna back in the 1990s.  It is still going strong in Black Rock City and has featured such luminaries as Alex & Allyson Grey, Alexander & Ann Shulgin, John Perry Barlow, Bruce Damer, and more...

So Begins My Tour of the Southeast...

The Love Without End Tour rolls through South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Ohio starting tomorrow.  Check my website's sidebar for a full calendar, or click the pics below for highlights:

Awesome first-year thing.  If all goes according to plan, my first performance with Glass.

An official Gratifly after-party!

A Unitus Festival pre-party ft. the music of The Fresh French, Kynara, & Feverkin.

This one came out of nowhere and is gearing up to be one of this summer's sleeper hits.

A tiny but juicy event in the beautiful mountains outside Boone, NC.

My fourth year out of four. Easily one of the best festivals of the entire year. Period.

And thank you for reading!  I hope you get as much out of this as I put into it.  Feedback is always welcome.  May your life be full of inspiration, empowerment, and beauty!
