Happy birthday to Ernst Haeckel, born 16 February 1834, who coined the term "ecology" and as one of the most influential and insightful scientist-artists in history, an absolutely prolific illustrator, a romantic, and a visionary, I see him as a kind of patron saint.  And a belated Happy Valentine's Day to each and all of you!  I wouldn't dedicate my life to art and music if I didn't think that love's the most important thing worth sharing and the motivation for it all.  (Love is the feeling, Life the means, of Creativity.)

I have a lot for you in this one.  May it find you well...enjoy, and stay in touch!

My latest live album – and my last for a while – is the result of six years of exploration into pushing the envelope with the looper as a live sampling and remix instrument, turning the guitar, voice, and a sixty-pound pedalboard into a quadrapedal one-person electronic orchestra.

These 80 minutes were recorded over five months across the Western US and run the gamut from atmospheric psych-western scores to films that don't exist to glitched-out proggy slow burners.   Enjoy, and thanks for your support!

Believe it or not, there really was such a thing as a pygmy Tyrannosaurus. Nanotyrannus stood about six feet tall and seventeen feet long – still a formidable predator by any modern standards, but more "ride into battle" size than "swallows you whole" size. While scientists can't be sure that they were actually purple, their close relationship to birds makes it likely that they at least occasionally broke out in song...and it's a fair bet, given their stature and dentition, that real life "Barney" would have loved children (probably several at a time).  And in related news, Godzilla Was Real.  ;)

It feels good to be back in the saddle with my Wacom digital stylus working in Photoshop...you can definitely expect more digital shenanigans from me in the months to come.  There's something truly meditative and aligned about working in this format; I found it super easy to get into flow with it.  Anyhow, Cello Joe is a friend of mine and a very talented looping cellist and beatboxer, and I recommend that you go listen to his music (all of it is pay-what-you-like).

Find an hour to chill on this laid-back but heady talk I gave at Gratifly Festival last year...  The first hour of a longer talk – apologies for the abrupt ending, but what's on tape is still one of the more interesting festival talks I think I've given.  On technology, culture, and consciousness, and how art can be used malevolently as mind control or for the good of all as a liberating force.

(I go into these knowing the theme but they always go off in new directions I didn't plan, so this one is pretty different from my previous rants on the same theme from Art Outside Festival and Firefly Gathering.)

The first night of this new monthly event I'm facilitating at the exquisite Strange Brew Lounge in Austin was a smash success.  Exploring spontaneous collaborations between instrumental electronic musicians is a recipe for emotionally compelling and intellectually intriguing live performances – and next month's way-cheaper-than-it-should-be show is going to feature several awesome new musicians in addition to the crew who took us all to hyperspace the first time!  I'm excited to be part of this.


Still a ways out, with plenty of great things happening between now and then, but I'm happy to announce that I'll be playing music and painting at the new Luminosa Festival in Eastern Texas.  Its ancestor, Archaic Revival, was mentioned in the New York Times in an article on the transformational movement – and this one has a very juicy lineup, including Kalya Scintilla, Bluetech, Erothyme, The Motet, Mingo Fishtrap, Henry & The Invisibles, and more...

The First Google Glass Music Videos | Cowboys Underground | New Hats & Shirt | My Burning Man Schedule

Well, guys, we are over the rainbow.  I just got back from a week in New York City, getting initiated into Google's Glass Explorer Program, that made my already-synchronistic life look like the black and white intro to Wizard of Oz.  I have so, SO many amazing things to share with you – too many to fit into this newsletter, which I may have to morph to a weekly offering in order to keep pace with the accelerating rate of amazement.  (It's paradoxically the only way I can respect your time – by not making you read an entire magazine every time I send you updates.)

To my knowledge, I'm the first person in the world to record point-of-view video from stage while performing live music – at Penny's Open Mic in the East Village:

...and then I stopped off on my way out of town at Evan "Skytree" Snyder's apartment to film this music video in his awesome bedroom mirror:

And in just 48 hours, I'm celebrating the end of José Arguelles' Dreamspell Calendar AND psychedelic visionary Aldous Huxley's birthday by screencasting my performance at Gratifly Festival through a projector and onto the stage behind me – closing the loop between artist and audience, letting people see firsthand what I'm doing with my equipment and what they look like on stage.  THIS is digital empathy, people!  A true and utter paradigm shift.  I'm extremely honored to have this opportunity and am already eager to share it with you.  I hope you'll be there but if you aren't, worry not: like everything these days, it WILL be recorded.  ;)

Now, of course, I haven't stopped sharing my "Landscape Channel" video series, which is another angle on the "Michael's point-of-view" idea and an attempt to share with you some of the beautiful places I get to inhabit in my travels.  Here's one from Om Vibrations 2013, where you get to see the amazing lighting design by Synaesthesiax that made this cave jam such a treat for the eyeballs:

New Hat & T-Shirt for Herbivore Designs

My third artist signature hat for Grassroots California is about to be released through Austin's own Herbivore Designs.  This is the first hat I've painted with a final embroidered product in mind, and in my personal opinion it's my best yet:


The hat has an accompanying Herbivore Designs tee – I really enjoyed getting back to my roots with pen and ink line illustration and going full-melt on this life-after-death design:

Yes, it's true.  I'll be staging my humbly triumphant return to this synchronicity pressure cooker just in time to contribute my music and ideas to some of the finest speaker line-ups this side of the millenium...

(I'll also be roving the Playa in my new life as a Glass Correspondent, covering all of the most amazing new technologies and art installations I can find.  Stay tuned for more about that in the weeks to come as I gear up for a crowdfunding campaign to defray my expenses and share a few of the amazing inventions I encountered on my trip to New York.)

Taking A Cosmic Perspective + My Latest Cyberacoustic Guitar EP

It isn't autumn – at least here in Austin.  But everyone I know is going through so much change – so much letting go, so much making room for new things – that the theme of autumn is timely nonetheless.

I'm proud to share with you my latest record, as well as the talk I gave at AURA Music Festival back in February – both of which center on facing the transcendental unknown with our heads up and our hearts open.  They're both free downloads.  Enjoy!

Recorded in a single take at a private backyard concert on Thanksgiving 2012, this 33:33 of improvised "cyberacoustic" instrumentals is my most spacious and poignant yet – evoking big autumn skies, far horizons, and the crunch of fallen leaves by bonfire light – but it defies expectations, remixing the familiar conventions of acoustic music with a fifty-pound pedalboard of beat slicers, filters, delays, and multi-channel loopers, welding fingerstyle technique into a cybernetic bed of live hardware production.

Picking (or often bowing, with an electromagnet) while twisting knobs and DJ'ing live samples with my toes, I perform as an embodiment of my training as an evolutionary biologist and futurist – liberating the organic into the digital, and the idioms of Americana into a new species of transcendental trance. 

Yellow Leaves is a definitive take on the adventurous and visionary musical attitude that earned my tenure as ReverbNation's #1 Experimental Musician in the world.

This performance was recorded on Thanksgiving 2012 and is a kind of musical fossil of that atmosphere of abundance and gratefulness. I hope that it serves you in your self-discovery. That its folksy-yet-futuristic vibe lends itself to your integration of past and future into the ever-blooming now. That it gets you laid by faeries.  (Based on the feedback so far, it may also be good for driving, painting, doing yoga, etc. I encourage you to experiment with set and setting.)

Pay whatever you like if the music works for you. I've had people reporting kundalini experiences, mad love sessions, and other wild shit going on with what I consider to be a pretty tame, if pretty, release.

My latest fleet jaunt through the wooded trails of the human imagination.  A philosophical performance examining our relationship to the transcendent – whether through awe and wonder or good old Fear of God, we all have an intense relationship with the Mystery – and how that relationship is due to change.

This time I took on the illusion of the individual, the evolution of technology, and the strangely familiar ancient future – weaving them all into a ripping speculative yarn on worlds beyond our imagination. I discuss right and wrong motivations for transhumanism, the prehistoric origins of the internet, and how the next industrial revolution might bring about a #festivalearth...

MG Music on PBS! | Winning Skateboard | New Collab Painting | On The Road To AURA

Good advice for navigating an increasingly novel universe, don't you agree?  At any rate, here are my latest creative (or possibly not) offerings, for you to evaluate now and then again in a few hundred years:

A milestone moment came for me last week when I watched the PBS documentary on my friends Austin aerial dance troupe Sky Candy and our show together last fall...and found my music woven into most of the 26-minute film.

I have film scoring fantasies, and am super honored that the producers at Arts In Context went with the music I offered them – which is now available to you for free, my first soundtrack, taken from four albums from the last two years:

Creation Skateboards Contest -- We Won!


Thanks to everyone's help, my entry into the Creation Skateboards skateboard design contest won with over 1,300 votes – the most "likes" I've ever gotten on anything, ever.  Y'all rock, I am so grateful for my frands!  This board will join the fall lineup and live forever alongside boards by some of my favorite visionary artists.

Creation Skateboards interviewed me about my inspiration for this painting and more:

This is a year for both more light and darkness, but that dragon has a buddha riding in its brow, and that’s the Master we each have in us that knows how to abide and ride this out. We all have many voices in our heads, many neural subroutines, but we can develop the Master self-pattern that organizes and integrates the rest. That’s the best way to make it through an age of crazy transitions…

I don't know if I can say anything authoritative about what was essentially a transpersonal effort.  Live art collabs are a very special kind of special...some kind of greater vision emerges silently from the interaction of our partialities.  Our techniques complement one another, our rhythms playing across one another sometimes intimately.  This piece is just wow, for me.  Just...wow.  It's raw, because I told everyone to just leave it be after a weekend of attention.  Time for us to move on to the next more perfectly visioned landscape....

Nonetheless, we were all still itching to touch it up.  I had to remind my friends of our half a dozen other unfinished collaborations.  Get a hefty serving of integrity with your rainbow cat!

A note on hats for the invested reader:  I'm honestly swamped with hat orders, so unless you want something ambitious and pricey, then I hope you're willing to wait.  It's a meditative, patient task, not exactly lucrative, more of a way to pray and play and practice and make money all at the same time while living in what my grandmother calls "holy poverty."  Which I enjoy...but it's not scalable – hence my renewed focus on licensing and merchandising.  If you have any ideas for how my art could be applied to something useful, let me know.  I'm open to and appreciative for your suggestions.

Well, we all lived through the long-anticipated 2012 Winter Solstice and civilization's first encounter with the cosmic inflection point: on December 21st, our Sun aligned with black hole Sagittarius A* at the heart of our galaxy.  A lot of people thought something crazy was going to happen, myself included...but it seems increasingly clear that the ride is just getting started.

The embrace of this accelerating change is the subject of my latest painting, as well as new musical and theatrical projects that have swept me up into exciting creative collaborations.  Isn't that why we're here?  To trade surfing tricks and astonished eye contact as we try our new lives on for size...

Between the original sessions and more than a year of Dreamcode's patient sculpting, over 100 hours of studio detail work went into Strangely Familiar – resulting in an ultra juicy 33:33 of...something...not quite witch house, not quite space hop, totally luxuriously weird.  Check us out on FB.

Land Without Evil

I just finished an eight-show run doing live music for this amazing production by Agent Red & Sky Candy, and filmed by PBS for their series, Arts in Context.  A story of colliding cultures in an age of transformation, adapted from the novel by Matthew Pallamary...we got to perform at the historic Stateside at the Paramount Theater in Austin and yes, it totally raised the bar.  Getting to work with such talented dancers, aerialists, video mapping projectionists, actors, live musicians, lighting engineers, and costume designers is just...wow.  This is why I love Austin.

An Inspirational Interview With Ideamensch

Last news but maybe the most interesting:  I recently sat down with Mario Schulke of Ideamensch, a website to inspire your entrepreneurial spirit.  He asked me some big questions, and I answered...  Here's a taste:

What is one business idea that you’re willing to give away to our readers?
Do what only you can do. There are a thousand people in line behind you except for what critical node in the working body of our species? This is a place where “your deep gladness meets the world’s needs.” (Frederick Buechner)  Go for that.

What is the one thing you do over and over and recommend everyone else do?
I remind myself that my resources are of many kinds, that luck is one of them, that help comes from strange places, and that I’m doing this for love, not money. (Money is just the blood that keeps the body working. I don’t need a basement full of blood.)

New Art Galore from Wakarusa, Desert Rocks, Impulse, & Sonic Bloom

First, A Message From The Future

Uploading yourself into a computer will NOT grant you immortality. There is no such thing as a stable medium. Servers crash, solar storms wipe hard drives and knock out satellites, and noisy electronic infrastructure degrades any signal over time.

Even if a million copies of yourself proliferate into the "un-erase-able" personal version of a viral youtube video, they won't remain static, unchanging objects, but will probably – and very swiftly – decide that their body memories are no longer relevant in the digital environment, and transform into something unrecognizable as "you."

The acceleration is just that: a quickening of the change that characterizes reality. The faster our world changes, the faster WE change. Our religious conviction about persistent identity is getting lost in the wash. "Shapeshifter" is the new "human." Immortality requires that we die to ourselves – not just once, but over, and over, and over...

Our age is when Science-as-exploration-of-transcendent-mystery and Religion-as-meaning-making-in-a-complex-world approach and kiss one another at the asymptote. Paradigms become transparently provisional. Self-concepts become art-forms offered hypothetically into the blossoming ecology of mind – worn like clothes, and changed just as easily.

To that end, I created this compilation of my favorite concert recordings from the last twelve months.  I needed a "get to know you" mix to share with new friends and colleagues, so here it is:  forty-three minutes of the shimmering, fleet, and organic murmurations that have come to characterize my sound as an improvisational acoustic-electronic looping guitarist.

It won't be long before I drop the follow-up to Golden Hour: A Cyberacoustic Summer Daydream – recordings culled from all of the amazing festival sets I've played this year – but in the meantime, enjoy!

I am pleased and honored to share with you the fruits of my busiest June so far.  I have so much more to share from this summer – videos, musical recordings, new essays – but for now it can wait, so we can give these paintings their due.  I decided to focus on only one piece per festival this summer, and the extra time investment really shows.  Click on any picture for a closer look...
